Mapping dengue hot spots pinpoints risk for Zika and chikungunya

(Emory Health Sciences) Data from nine cities in Mexico confirms that identifying dengue fever " hot spots " can provide a predictive map for future outbreaks of Zika and chikungunya. All three of these viral diseases are spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

ConclusionsIn view of the escalating infectious diseases as global threats, gaps and challenges are significantly present within the EWS applications. While some advanced EWS showed high prediction abilities, the scarcity of tool assessments in terms of integration into existing national surveillance systems as well as of the feasibility of transforming model outputs into local vector control or action plans tends to limit in most cases the support of countries in controlling disease outbreaks.

Conclusions/significanceOur results demonstrated that the NC-wMelAe.aegypti strain is a strong inhibitor of DENV, CHIKV, and ZIKV infection and prevents transmission of infectious viral particles in mosquito saliva. Furthermore, our NC-wMelAe.aegypti strain induces reproductive cytoplasmic incompatibility with minimal apparent fitness costs and high maternal transmission, supporting field-releases in Noumea, NC.

The spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pattern is characterized by multiple dotted-like and longitudinal hyperintense lesions, with contrast enhancement, mostly distributed in the peripheral regions of the spinal cord. ConclusionsOverall, the contact rate between M. anisopliae-infected males with the natural female population was 60% higher than for the control group of healthy males.
