Practical Concepts in Electromyography

Electromyography has been a longstanding valuable technique in the evaluation of neuromuscular disorders. The basic concepts of nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography were well established decades ago. While these same concepts still form the basis of the technique and interpretation of the studies today, advances in the techniques, approaches, and findings recorded during testing have helped physicians more accurately identify diseases. Furthermore, while advances in other ancillary testing, such as genetic testing and neuroimaging, have provided useful methods to diagnose neuromuscular disorders, electrodiagnostic testing provides information regarding the actual function of the neuromuscular system that cannot be assessed by other tests.
