Defining Postdocs in the Survey of Graduate Students and Postdocs ( GSS ) : Institution Responses to the Postdoc Definitional Questions in the GSS 2010 – 16

With approximately 65,000 postdocs working at U.S. academic institutions in 2016, postdocs are an important segment of the U.S. research enterprise. Despite the increased focus on postdoc positions, identifying and counting postdocs remain difficult for many institutions. This InfoBrief examines institutional coordinators ’ responses to a series of postdoc definition questions included in the Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering ( GSS ) from 2010 through 2016. The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation has conducted the GSS since 1979.
