Racial differences in renal transplantation: How do we bridge the gap?

In kidney transplantation, racial differences may be greatest long before a recipient receives a call for a potential transplant surgery due to differing referral practices among socioeconomic groups, while other biological differences also occur after transplantation. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 26 million Americans, more than 2% of them progressing to end stage kidney disease (ESKD).1 African Americans (AAs) have almost 4 times higher incidence of ESKD when compared to Whites.
