Association between obesity with pattern and length of menstrual cycle: The role of metabolic and hormonal markers

Obesity is a problem of public health, whose prevalence increases worldwide [1]. Women with obesity have increased risk of irregular menstrual cycle length [2], which can lead to an increased risk of miscarriage and fertility problems [3]. There are some established mechanisms whereby obesity could affect the follicular phase (FP) and luteal phase (LP) of the menstrual cycle. First is due to hyperinsulinemia, which generates an imbalance in SHBG and androgens, avoiding adequate ovulation [2,4]. Second, obesity produces chronic metabolic and systemic inflammation, altering the reproductive functions of the hypothalamic –pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis.
