24. Discordant Substance Use and the Daily Experience of Partner Violence in Adolescent and Emerging Adults With Previous Dating Violence

Teen dating violence (TDV) is a significant public health issue in the United States and can have detrimental effects on adolescent health. Substance use has been identified as both as a risk factor and a consequence of TDV. Research among adults has found that substance use by one or both partners has different impacts on violence within the relationship. Among adults, concordant use has been shown to have a positive impact and improve relationship quality, while discordant use is associated with increased conflict.
