Trends and Outcomes of Transcatheter Valve Implantation in Patients with Prior Mediastinal Radiation
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a safe and effective alternative for patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) irrespective of their surgical risk.1, 2 Aortic stenosis is the most common radiation-induced valvular heart disease. Surgical aortic valve replacement is associated with higher operative mortality and morbidity among patients with prior mediastinal radiation. 3 While a percutaneous approach appears appealing for patients with prior mediastinal radiation, these patients were excluded from pivotal randomized trials.
