Youths with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often present with complex clinical presentations and immense behavioral health needs. These co-occurring symptoms include, but are not limited to, anxiety, depression, disruptive behavior, and sleep problems. To put it bluntly, these issues are not yet adequately addressed by the fields of psychology and psychiatry. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the gold standard nonpharmacologic intervention for such clinical problems; yet, CBT providers are often scarce, and, even when available, few clinicians feel confident adapting this modality for individuals on the autism spectrum.
