Microbusinesses contribute to the U.S. economy by bringing growth and innovation and being more adaptable to changes. However, relatively little is known about the R&D activities of these businesses. This InfoBrief presents R&D and other data on microbusinesses, defined here as those with one to nine domestic employees. In 2017, microbusinesses spent $ 6.7 billion on research and development costs in the United States, of which $ 5.7 billion was performed by the microbusinesses themselves.
