Introduction

Translational research into the therapeutics of Parkinson disease (PD) has been guided by the words of James Parkinson, whose 1817 monograph on the “shaking palsy” warned that “…Until we are better informed respecting the nature of the disease, the employment of internal medicines is scarcely warrantable”. Fortunately, Arvid Carlsson’s studies with levodopa treatment warranted translation from experiments in reserpinized rabbits to a therapy effective at relieving the discomforts and disabilities of PD patients.
