Salivary microbiome in patients undergoing hemodialysis and its associations with the duration of the dialysis

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, especially those with end stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD), exhibit high prevalence of periodontitis. This cross-sectional study aimed to investiga...

AbstractBackgroundIt is currently controversial whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has a prognostic role in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to investigate whether NLR was an independent predictor of cardiovascular or all-cause mortality in CKD patients with or without hemodialysis by performing a meta-analysis.MethodsPubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases are systematically searched for relevant literature that investigated NLR and subsequent cardiovascular or all-cause mortality risk in CKD with or without dialysis. Pooled hazard risk (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calcul...

CONCLUSION: The observed high rate of AVF at the start of hemodialysis and of the switch from CVC to AVF in the first year, although declining since 2008, is a positive outcome. However, over one-third of patients maintain the CVC as vascular access for the first year because of unmodifiable factors, such as gender, age, comorbidity. The present study suggests that logistics/management and assistance/welfare problems may contribute to the delay or lack of AVF placement in incident hemodialysis patients or within the first year of dialysis. CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of CCBs over other antihypertensives on predialysis blood pressure levels and intradialytic hypotension among people with CKD who required haemodialysis were uncertain. Effects of CCBs on other side effects and cardiovascular death also remain uncertain. Dihydropyridine CCBs may decrease predialysis systolic and diastolic blood pressure level compared to placebo or no treatment. No studies were identified in children or peritoneal dialysis. Available studies have not been designed to measure the effects on costs. The shortcomings of the studies were that they recruited very few participants, had f...

Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients experience an increased risk of cerebrovascular disease and cognitive dysfunction. Hemodialysis (HD), a major modality of renal replacement therapy in ESKD, can cause rapid changes in blood pressure, osmolality, and acid-base balance that collectively present a unique stress to the cerebral vasculature. This review presents an update regarding cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation in CKD and ESKD, and how the maintenance of cerebral oxygenation may be compromised during HD. ESKD patients exhibit decreased cerebral oxygen delivery due...

CONCLUSION: COVID-19 infection is associated with increased mortalit in chronic kidney diseases patients. Despite being non-significant, there was a trend towards increased mortality in patient with diabetes, D-dimer levels>1000 ugFEU/L and higher ferritin, prokalsitonin levels, increased CRP/albumin raio and lower neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio. ConclusionAging, inflammation, low serum albumin to total proteins ratio and low phase angle values as indicators of malnutrition are predictors of severe CVC in end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis.

CONCLUSION: patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment for chronic kidney disease were found to be at the 10th percentile for muscle strength, as measured by dynamometry, thus demonstrating a marked decrease in muscle strength. This result could, however, also have been affected by different variables such as patient age, height, weight, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), hemoglobin concentration, serum creatinine, serum glucose, and the subjective global assessment, given that a significant association was also found between these and muscle strength. Authors: Abasi K, Lotfi Z, Ahmadi M, Majd HM, Hasanzamani B Abstract INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PHTN) is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease. Delayed Graft Function (DGF), on the other hand; is an essential complication after kidney transplantation. These two complications increase morbidity and mortality in patients. The effect of PHTN on cardiovascular and graft blood supply, as well as the same mechanisms underlying PTHN and DGF; led us to investigate the relationship between them. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 306 patients aged 18 years or older who underw...

We describe a 42-year-old man with chronic kidney disease stage 4 who was diagnosed with a mediastinal germ cell tumor and metastases in lung and brain. Treatment with cisplatin-etoposide was considered essential for a chance of cure. In order to administer the full cisplatin dose, 4-hour hemodialysis sessions were performed after each cisplatin infusion. During treatment cycle 3, 4 and 5, total and unbound plasma platinum concentrations were measured. Trough concentrations and half-life were at the higher end of the range of those observed in patients with adequate renal function who received the same dose of cisplatin. H...
