Age- and Sex-Specific Incidence of Non-Traumatic Lower Limb Amputation in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in a U.S. Claims Database

Lower limb amputation is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus. Using the National Inpatient Sample from the year 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 130,000 hospitalizations for LLA in adults aged 18 years and older with diabetes in the US (1). Moreover, a recent study conducted using hospital discharge data from the US reported an increase in the incidence of non-traumatic LLA among patients with diabetes from the year 2009 to 2015 after a two-decade decline (2).
