Cultural pathways for suicidal ideation and behaviors.

Conclusions: Findings elucidated pathways involving both general distress and cultural factors, and pathways from cultural life events to suicide constructs independent of mental illness-related factors. Findings question utilizing mental illness as a primary suicide driver, make theoretical contributions in refining the cultural theory and model of suicide, and advance understandings of roles of cultural factors in suicide research and practice.
