The first report of Neospora caninum prevalence in aborted and healthy sheep from west of Iran

Abstract Serum samples from 586 sheep were collected from eight flocks within Aleshtar-Kahman region, in the west area of Iran. The samples were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antibody against Neospora caninum. The observed prevalence of N. caninum infection was 1.13 % for aborted sheep and 1.70 % for healthy sheep, and the titers ranged from 1/160 to 1/2,560. There was no significant difference between aborted and healthy sheep for N. caninum infection (overall χ 2 = 1.04, p value = 0.516, d.f. = 1). The present study is the first report on the seroprevalence of N. caninum in sheep from west of Iran and shows that infection by N. caninum parasites is not responsible for ovine abortion from Zagros mountain area of Iran.
