We examined the reliability of a commercially available assay for S100B used on the same samples by two different laboratories separated by 2 years in time. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A cohort of 163 adult patients (head CT-scanned, n = 110) with mild head injury were enrolled from the emergency department (ED). All had Glasgow Coma Scale scores of 14 or 15 in the ED (94.4% = 15). The mean time between injury and venous blood sampling was 2.9 h (SD = 1.4; Range = 0.5-6.0 h). Serum S100B was measured at two independent centers using the same high throughput clinical assay (Elecs...

This article is adapted from Jessica Helfand’s book “Face,” an elaborately illustrated A to Z of the face, from historical mugshots to Instagram posts. Hardly the first to postulate on the graphic evidence of the grimace, Darwin hoped to introduce a system by which facial expressions might be properly evaluated. He shared with many of his generation a predisposition toward history: simply put, the idea that certain facial traits might have a basis in evolution. Empirically, the idea itself is not unreasonable. We are, after all, genetically predisposed to share traits with those in our familial line, occa...

Conclusion: Sarcopenia is an independent risk factor for fracture nonunion following operative fixation of open tibia or ankle fracture, but is not predictive of surgical site infection. Gustilo Anderson classification is strongly associated with SSI risk. Psoas index is a straightforward and objective method of identifying sarcopenia in patients with open fractures. Diagnosing sarcopenia in these individuals can inform medical decision making and patient counseling regarding risk for nonunion. Further work is needed to identify effective interventions to improve outcomes in these patients.Level of Evidence: III. PMID:...

In this study, novel Fluorine-18-labeled streptozotocin (STZ) derivatives were synthesized to serve as glycoside analogs for in-vivo GLUT2 imaging. Fluorine was introduced to hexyl groups at the 3'-positions of the compounds, and we aimed to synthesize compounds that were more stable than STZ. The nitroso derivatives exhibited relatively good stability during purification and purity analysis after radiosynthesis. We then evaluated the compounds in PET imaging and ex-vivo biodistribution studies. We observed high levels of radioactivity in the liver and kidney, which indicated accumulation in these organs within 5 min ...

Presently available methods of determining whether or not amyloid-β aggregates exist in the brain are expensive and invasive. Amyloid-β forms solid deposits in and around cells in the brain for decades prior to the first obvious signs of neurodegeneration, and people with raised levels of these protein aggregates are more likely to progress to dementia. Early, accurate, low-cost measurements of amyloid-β prior to symptoms could lead to the identification of lifestyle choices that minimize risk, as well as to the development of preventative therapies. Absent assays that can achieve this goal, there is little ...

The current pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spotlighted the vulnerability of patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) to the viral infection. Social distancing is the most effective preventive measure to reduce the risk of infection. Nonetheless, the necessity to frequently reach the dialysis center and the inherent social gathering both impede social distancing and also self-quarantine for infected individuals. A baseline hyperinflammatory state driven by factors such as the retention of uremic toxins afflicts these patients. Concomitantly, a condition of relative immun...
