The locus of care for older adults is rapidly shifting from institutional to community settings. Consistent with preferences for care and policy changes, the past decade has seen a proliferation of community-based residential alternatives to private residences and nursing homes including assisted living facilities, retirement communities, personal care homes, and senior citizen housing.
