Pregnancy as a window to future health: what next?

Pregnancy as a window to future health: what next? BJOG. 2020 Jun 08;: Authors: Theilen LH Abstract The women's health paradigm has shifted in recent years. We have moved from considering pregnancy and its attendant complications as isolated events in a woman's life to viewing these as ongoing pertinent components of a woman's health history. Gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, in particular, are now recognized as markers of increased risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases among women later in life (Lane-Cordova AD et al, J Am Coll Cardiol, 2019, 73:2106-2116). Fetal growth restriction, placental abruption, stillbirth, and spontaneous preterm birth have also been identified as potential risk factors for adverse long-term health outcomes among women. The common thread underlying these obstetric conditions remains somewhat uncertain, although abnormalities of placentation and inflammation are plausible candidates.
