Pituitary Apoplexy during hematopoietic cell transplantation
Pituitary apoplexy is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by sudden hemorrhage or infarction of the pituitary gland (1). The prevalence of this complication is approximately 8% in patients with preexisting nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma(2). It can result in rapid bilateral vision loss, altered mental status, panhypopituitarism, and increased intracranial pressure (3). Impaired coagulation status is one of the precipitating causes of pituitary apoplexy. Patients who undergo hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) develop significant thrombocytopenia, which puts them at higher risk for apoplexy (4).
