Antiemetic use in US EDs

While antiemetic medications are frequently administered in US emergency departments (EDs) , concerns have recently been raised over the safety profile of some of these medications, ondansetron (Zofran) for prolonged QT and promethazine (Phenergan) for tissue necrosis and extrapyramidal symptoms, which can be lasting and devastating to the patient . Recent nation drug shortages of other antiemetics, prochlorperazine (Compazine) and metoclopramide (Reglan), may alter physician practices and disproportionately impact specific populations .
