The sound of music: short-term effects of live music performance on the cognitive and emotional statuses of residential patients with major neurocognitive disorder

Patients with neurocognitive disorders (NCD) commonly experience a range of psychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, and agitation.1 These comorbidities complicate the course of treatment for these patients as well as exacerbate caregiver burden. Since pharmacologic interventions are known to pose significant risks to these patients, there is great urgency to find additional non-pharmacologic options to improve quality of care.1 Music therapy is becoming a more frequently used tool in different treatment settings and has been shown to improve anxiety and depression, however intensive and structured music therapy can also be a cost burden for residential facilities.
