5B2Aching to be Thin: The Spectrum of Pain in Anorexia and Bulimia

More deadly than any other mental illness (anorexia in particular with a 10-20% mortality rate), eating disorders are strikingly prevalent (about 30 million Americans of every gender, race, and socioeconomic category, including increasingly younger children). Anorexia and bulimia can be particularly painful, both in the course of the disease and in treatment. Many patients seek treatment for their pain, rather than for their eating disorder, and are often misdiagnosed because they do not self-report, and the practitioner doesn ’t screen for the eating disorder.
