Significant fibrosis predicts new-onset diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension in patients with NASH

Biopsy-proven NAFLD patients with significant fibrosis were at risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension. The risk of metabolic outcomes in patients with significant fibrosis was increased in presence of obesity. Additionally to the liver biopsy, patients with intermediate-to-high risk of significant fibrosis by Hepamet Fibrosis Score were at risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
