Optimization of the thyroid panel for diagnostic purposes: Thyrotropin cut-off values for the reflex addition of free thyroxine

DiscussionSetting optimized thyrotropin cutoffs for reflex testing of free thyroxine would reduce the need for this test. Clinical laboratories need to offer not only true results, but also become the cornerstone in the optimization of resources.

Men and women experience schizophrenia differently; from the age of onset to symptoms and how society treats those with mental disorders.  Schizophrenic, Rachel Star Withers and co-host Gabe Howard continue the discussion of the differences from the last episode but change the focus to men.  Jason Jepson, an author who has schizophrenia joins for a man’s perspective and Dr. Hayden Finch returns to explain the clinical side of the issues. Highlights in “Schizophrenia in Men” Episode [01:30] Age of onset [04:00] Symptoms in men vs women [05:00] Interview with Jason Jepson [07:30] Jason discusses ...

Abstract Preeclampsia is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases later in life. To investigate this phenomenon, we compared established markers of cardiovascular dysregulation between previously preeclamptic women (PPE; n=12; 13±6 months postpartum; 34±6 y) and women who had previously had an uncomplicated pregnancy (CTRL; n=12; 15±4 months postpartum; 29±3 y). We hypothesized that PPE would present with elevated arterial stiffness (assessed as central and peripheral pulse wave velocity) and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA; microneurography), and blunted baror...

AbstractObjectiveThe aim of this study was to demonstrate the temporal profile of changes in heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure variability (BPV), and cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) during the course of a healthy pregnancy.Materials and methodsThis was a longitudinal study during which autonomic variability parameters (HRV, BPV, BRS) were assessed in 66 pregnant women at 11 –13, 20–22 and 30–32 weeks of gestation. A lead II electrocardiogram tracing and beat-to-beat blood pressure were recorded with the subject breathing spontaneously in the supine position. Changes in the parameters ...

Abstract We tested the hypothesis that exposure to intermittent hypoxia (IH) during pregnancy would prolong the laryngeal chemoreflex (LCR) and diminish the capacity of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) to terminate the LCR. Prenatal exposure to IH was associated with significant prolongation of the LCR in younger, anesthetized, postnatal day (P) rat pups age P8 to P16 compared to control, room air (RA)-exposed rat pups of the same age. Serotonin microinjected into the NTS shortened the LCR in rat pups exposed to RA during gestation, but 5-HT failed to shorten the LCR in rat pups exposed to prenatal IH. Given ...

In this study, the impact of prenatal infection (PNI), using a naturally occurring rodent pathogen, Mycoplasma pulmonis (MP), on adult body weight and cardiovascular function was evaluated. Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were infected with MP on gestational day 14 and gave birth naturally. Adult PNI offspring of weighed more than controls, but resting mean arterial pressure (MAP) was unchanged. Subcutaneous injection of angiotensin II (Ang II; 10 μg/kg) elicited a rise in MAP that was greater in both male and female PNI offspring compared to controls (P
