Randomized clinical trial on reduction of radiotherapy dose to the elective neck in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma; update of the long-term tumor outcome

Treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) includes management of the cervical lymph nodes by surgical neck dissection or by irradiation of the neck. In HNSCC treated with primary radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with curative intent, the suspected or histological proven malignant nodes are treated together with the primary tumor up to a high total dose of RT such as an equivalent dose by 2  Gy fractions (EQD2) of 70 Gy. These macroscopic tumor volumes are delineated on dedicated imaging in treatment position and are encompassed within the gross tumor volume (GTV).
