There Is No National Security Justification for the New Immigration Ban

Alex NowrastehThe Trump administration justreleased an immigration ban on the six countries of Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan, Eritrea, Myanmar, Tanzania, and Sudan. Citizens of Nigeria, Myanmar, Eritrea, and Kyrgyzstan won ’t be allowed to apply for green cards. Citizens of Tanzania and Sudan won’t be able to apply for the green card lottery.There is no national security justification for banning immigrants from those countries. From 1975 through 2017, 11 foreign ‐​born terrorists from those countries attempted or committed attacks on U.S. soil. They murdered 6 people in their attacks. The annual chance of being murdered by a foreign ‐​born terrorist from those six countries on U.S. soil is about 1 in 1.9billionper year. Those 6 murders by terrorists account for 0.2 percent of all people murdered by foreign ‐​born terrorists on U.S. soil from 1975 to 2017.By comparison, the annual chance of being murdered in a normal non ‐​terrorist homicide during that time was about 1 in 14,383, or 134,000times greater than being murdered in a terrorist attack committed by a person from one of those six banned countries.The Tsarnaev brothers who committed theBoston Bombing in 2013 were born in Kyrgyzstan.
