Sustainability claims about rubber don't stick

(University of G ö ttingen) Companies work hard to present an environmentally responsible image. How well do these claims stack up? Researchers from G ö ttingen University investigated claims regarding sustainability, conservation and fair pay, as presented by the French Michelin Group. Researchers then compared these claims with effects described by local people. Villagers' reports indicated that land-ownership, ecosystems and biodiversity suffered; researchers found that pay at the rubber plantation fell short of the minimum wage. Results appeared in the Journal of Land Use Science.
