Continuum Robot With Follow-the-Leader Motion for Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy and Tumor Biopsy

Conclusion: We present the application of a continuum robot with FTL motion to perform a combined ETV/ETB procedure. The validation study using human subject data indicated that the accuracy of FTL motion is relatively high. The study indicated that FTL motion may be useful tool for combined ETV and ETB.

AbstractFoetal onset hydrocephalus is a disease starting early in embryonic life; in many cases it results from a cell junction pathology of neural stem (NSC) and neural progenitor (NPC) cells forming the ventricular zone (VZ) and sub-ventricular zone (SVZ) of the developing brain. This pathology results in disassembling of VZ and loss of NSC/NPC, a phenomenon known as VZ disruption. ConclusionOverinflation of the balloon during ETV and subsequent hypothalamic injury can cause DI, a rare but potentially dangerous complication of this procedure. Postoperative surveillance and management of electrolytes disturbances is crucial to prevent any long term injury. ETV must be reconsidered if the prepontine cistern is not clearly patent to avoid complications.

Shunt infection is one of the common causes of shunt malfunction.
