This report describes the study protocol of a randomized prospective multi-centre open-label clinical trial to evaluate whether starting renal replacement therapy with twice-weekly haemodialysis sessions preserves residual renal function better than the standard thrice-weekly regimen. We also explore other clinical parameters, such as concentrations of uremic toxins, dialysis doses, control of anaemia, removal of medium-weight uremic toxins, nutritional status, quality of life, hospital admissions and mortality. Only incident haemodialysis patients who can maintain a urea clearance rate KrU ≥ 2.5 mL/min/1.73&thin...

In this study, the prevalence of carnitine deficiency and the clinical factors associated with carnitine deficiency were investigated in 60 patients undergoing PD. The median age of the patients was 62.5 years (52.5-72.5 years), the proportion of male sex was 44/60 (73.3%), and the median PD period was 24 months (12-45 months). Carnitine deficiency (acyl carnitine/free carnitine ratio>0.4) was detected in 56/60 (93%) patients. Multiple regression analysis showed that the erythropoietin resistance index was independently associated with carnitine deficiency (β = 0.283, p&thi...

CONCLUSIONS: In our study that included patients seen at hemodialysis departments in Uzbekistan, chronic viral hepatitis C was greatly prevalent, although occurring mainly in a minimal form of the pathologic process. Chronic viral hepatitis C has an aggravating effect on the course of underlying diseases with development of adverse outcomes. PMID: 32008494 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Yao X, Chen S, Lei W, Shi N, Lin W, Du X, Zhang P, Chen J Abstract Objectives: In China, there are two major medical insurance models: the Urban Basic Medical Insurance (UBMI) and the New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of the medical insurance type of patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) with their survival. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the end-stage renal disease adult patients initiating HD between January 2010 and December 2014 in Zhejiang province, followed up through 31 December 2015. Patients who had received HD for over 3&thins...

This study included 90 hemodialysis patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and 86 hemodialysis patients without DM. We examined blood parameters after an overnight fast and body fat and lean mass using dual X-ray absorptiometry 21-24 h after completing the dialysis session. Results: The mean body mass index (BMI) was 22.0 kg/m2. BMI and truncal fat mass were significantly higher, and total fat mass tended to be higher in hemodialysis patients with DM than in those without DM. GA exhibited inverse correlations with BMI, total lean mass, total fat mass, and truncal fat mass in hemodialysis patients with and witho...

ConclusionPreviously dialysis was standard, currently it is oriented by efficiency criteria. The ascension of the PA paralyzial is a paradox and several factors are incriminated: water overload, fast UF, short sessions, arterial rigidity, anemia. The use of an ideal dry weight and long hemodialysis allows a Significant improvement in blood pressure control through better control of extracellular volume (ECV). In addition, there is a lack of morbidity and mortality studies among dialysis patients as well as a clear definition of blood pressure targets in this group of patients forgotten by the studies.

Abstract Malaria is a parasitic infection of global importance but has a high prevalence in the developing countries. Renal failure is a common complication of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria and has been reported in up to 40% of all cases. Acute kidney injury (AKI), however, is not commonly associated with Plasmodium vivax infection. In those patients who develop AKI following P. vivax infection, the cause is commonly attributed to mixed undiagnosed falciparum infection or coexistent sepsis, dehydration, or hypotension. Infrequently, an association of P. vivax infection with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) ...
