Looking at the Big Neurochemical Picture of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder (i.e., it emerges in the first years of life) that tends to be characterized by abnormalities in social interactions, verbal and nonverbal communication, and restricted or repetitive/stereotyped behaviors (1). While the DSM-5 has adopted a unidimensional diagnostic approach (incorporating autism, Asperger disorder, and developmental delay disorders under one ASD label), a substantial degree of symptom heterogeneity exists (2). While certain symptom profiles are mild and have a relatively low impact on daily functioning, others are debilitating.
