Association between age-related macular degeneration and subjective cognitive complaints.

Association between age-related macular degeneration and subjective cognitive complaints. Br J Ophthalmol. 2019 Dec 04;: Authors: Zhu Z, Liao H, Wang W, Scheetz J, Zhang J, He M Abstract PURPOSE: To investigate the association between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) in the USA. METHODS: A total of 5604 participants aged 40 years and older from the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. Retinal photography was graded into no AMD, early and late AMD based on the modification of the Wisconsin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading System. SCCs were based on the self-reported difficulty in remembering or confusion. Sample weights were used to generate nationally representative data. Multivariate regression analyses were used to assess the association between AMD severity and SCCs, controlling for potential confounders. RESULTS: Participants with any AMD had higher prevalence of SCCs relative to participants without AMD (6.8% vs 13.6%, p

NANOTHERAPIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD) DISEASE: RECENT ADVANCEMENTS AND CHALLENGES. Recent Pat Drug Deliv Formul. 2020 Jan 16;: Authors: Rapalli VK, Gorantla S, Waghule T, Mahmood A, Singh PP, Dubey SK, Saha RN, Singhvi G Abstract Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the common diseases affecting the posterior part of the eye, affecting a large population above 45 years old. Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (Anti-VEGF-A) agents have been considered as approved as therapeutic agents for the treatment of AMD. Due to the large molecular weight and po...

CONCLUSION: According to the studies included in this review, periodontal disease may be a plausible risk factor for AMD and may have a potential role in the earlier stages of this eye disease. Further studies should be encouraged for better understanding of this potential new relationship. PMID: 31926570 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusion: OCTA has a high PCV polyp and BVN detection rate, and the detection rate of BVNs is higher than that of the polyp. OCTA has acceptable sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing PCV from wAMD. Thus, OCTA may be helpful for clinical diagnosis of PCV. PMID: 31915542 [PubMed]

ADVANCED HYDROGELS BASED DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS FOR OPHTHALMIC DELIVERY. Recent Pat Drug Deliv Formul. 2020 Jan 07;: Authors: Gorantla S, Waghule T, Rapalli VK, Singh PP, Dubey SK, Saha RN, Singhvi G Abstract Hydrogels are aqueous gels composed of cross-linked networks of hydrophilic polymers. Stimuli-responsive based hydrogels have gained focus over the past 20 years for treating ophthalmic diseases. Different stimuli-responsive mechanisms are involved in forming polymer hydrogel networks, including change in temperature, pH, ions, and other includes light, thrombin, pressure, antigen, and glucose-resp...

Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a predominant cause of visual deficit in aged population. Abnormal accumulation of cholesterol, including oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), underneath the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells contributes to the development of AMD. Gypenosides (Gyp) are glycosides extracted from Gynostemma pentaphyllum and have demonstrated protective effects against inflammation and oxidative stress. To determine the therapeutic potential of Gyp for AMD, we investigated its effect on cholesterol trafficking and metabolism and assessed the protective function of Gyp again...
