Hepatitis C-Related Mortality Among American Indian/Alaska Native Persons in the Northwestern United States, 2006-2012.

CONCLUSION: The disproportionate rate of HCV-related mortality among AI/AN persons in the Northwest highlights the need to expand HCV education, screening, and treatment among this population. PMID: 31765285 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ou Ling We aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of (1) treating acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) vs deferring treatment until the chronic phase and (2) treating all chronic patients vs only those with advanced fibrosis; among Chinese genotype 1b treatment-naïve patients who injected drugs (PWID), using a combination Daclatasvir (DCV) plus Asunaprevir (ASV) regimen and a Peg-interferon (PegIFN)-based regimen, respectively. A decision-analytical model including the risk of HCV reinfection simulated lifetime costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) of three treatment timings, under the DCV+ASV and PegIFN r...

Liver cancer is hard to treat. It’s a top-five cause of cancer-related death worldwide and a growing cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Since liver cancer is often found at a late stage, when treatment has limited benefit, there has been increasing interest in prevention. That’s where statin medications might come in. Liver cancer is usually caused by chronic liver disease, so an important way to prevent liver cancer is to treat the underlying trigger. For example, curing hepatitis C infection — an important cause of chronic liver disease — reduces the risk of liver cancer. However...

This study examined predictors of, and relationships between, objective (Medication Management Test-Revised (MMT-R)) and self-reported medication management ability in older ( ≥ 50 years) PLWH (n = 146) compared with HIV-uninfected (HIV-) individuals (n = 60). PLWH scored worse on the MMT-R and had a higher pill burden compared with HIV- individuals. MMT-R failure was predicted by HIV status, race, reading level, and worse executive functioning, as well as history of Hepatitis C and detectable viral load in PLWH. Self-reported ability to manag e medications did not relate to MMT-R...

CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a common pathogenetic mechanism in EMC, HCV-MC and primary Sjögren's syndrome, consisting of autoantigen-driven clonal expansion and exhaustion of selected RF-producing B-cells. The more massive clonal expansion in HCV-MC may be due to co-stimulatory signals provided by the virus. PMID: 31969220 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Transfusion related hepatitis C(HCV) is rare in the west, in the developing world, it remains a challenge. Children with hematological malignancies are especially vulnerable due to large number of blood components received. They often develop active hepatitis due to immunocompromised status and concurrent hepatic insults from chemotherapy and iron overload. Stem cell transplant(SCT) further increases hepatic risk due to veno-occlusive disease(VOD) and hepatic graft versus host disease(GVHD).Direct acting antivirals(DAA) have revolutionized treatment of HCV.

Seki Okazaki Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) sometimes occurs in mildly fibrotic livers, while HCC incidence in NASH-related cirrhosis is lower than and less predictable than in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related cirrhosis. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling in hepatocytic nuclei is implicated in fibrosis and carcinogenesis. TGF-βtype I receptor (TβRI) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) differentially phosphorylate the mediator Smad3, resulting in 2 distinct phospho-isoforms: C-terminally phosphorylated Smad3 (pSmad3C) and linker-phosphoryl...

ConclusionThe favorable linkage to care and cure outcomes in our study suggests that homeless persons may be more likely to engage in HCV screening and treatment when these services are located in the community for their use. Our study further lends support to the efficacy of care coordination programs to encourage movement through the HCV care continuum in vulnerable populations.
