AbstractMore than 0.6 million people suffer from disabling migraines in Greece causing a dramatic work loss, but only a small proportion of migraineurs attend headache centres, most of them being treated by non-experts. On behalf of the Hellenic Headache Society, we report here a consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of adult migraine that is based on the recent guidelines of the European Headache Federation, on the principles of Good Clinical Practice and on the Greek regulatory affairs. The purposes are three-fold: (1) to increase awareness for migraine in Greece; (2) to support Greek practitioners who are treating mi...

Migraine is a huge medical problem, accounting for half of the disability produced by all neurologic diseases worldwide. The medication sumatriptan (Imitrex) is well known for the treatment of a migraine attack. Sumatriptan is part of a group of medications known as the triptans. Triptan medications have been in use for over 20 years and are very effective for the acute treatment of headache (relieving migraine headaches that are already in progress). But they also have limitations; triptans can cause temporary narrowing of blood vessels in the heart and elsewhere that can result in side effects, such as chest pain or tigh...

Youth who are taking antidepressants in the class of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are more likely to experience side effects that cause them to discontinue the medication than those taking serotonin-norepinephrine inhibitors (SNRIs), according to a report in theJournal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.SSRIs also appear to be more commonly associated with “activation syndrome”—a cluster of symptoms including restlessness, anxiety, and agitation. Both classes of antidepressants are commonly prescribed for young people with ...

Authors: Togha M, Bahrpeyma F, Jafari M, Nasiri A Abstract BACKGROUND: Cervicogenic headache (CeH) is among the common types of headache which has an undesirable influence on the quality of life. The myofascial trigger point (MTrP) within the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle is one of the most important causes of CeH. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of dry needling (DN) and ischemic compression (IC) on the headache symptoms as well as MTrP-related features in subjects with CeH originating from MTrPs of the SCM muscle using a sonographic method. METHODS: A total of 29 female su...

We present a case of GCA in a patient who presented with jaw claudication and occlusal pain. A 78-year-old man visited our department with left-sided facial pain associated with mastication. He also reported spontaneous left-sided facial pain and diminished vision. Based on his age, his new-onset left-sided headache, and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, he was diagnosed with GCA with immediate initiation of prednisolone (PSL) therapy. His fever subsided the following day. A temporal artery biopsy (TAB) was performed 7 days after hospitalization and showed a false-negative result. His left-sided facial pain and headac...

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, e-First Articles. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus that was first isolated from Zika forest, Uganda, in 1947. Since its inception, major and minor outbreaks have been documented from several parts of world. Aedes spp. mosquitoes are the primary vectors of ZIKV, but the virus can also be transmitted through sexual practices, materno-fetal transmission, and blood transfusion. The clinical presentations of symptomatic ZIKV infections are similar to dengue and chikungunya, including fever, headache, arthralgia, retro-orbital pain, conjunctivitis, and rash. ZIKV often causes mild ill...

AbstractThe risk of pain after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) among depressed patients is still controversial. We aimed to investigate the risk of pain post-ECT among patients with depression. We investigated patients with depression, based on the data in the National Health Insurance Research Database. A comparison cohort comprising depressed non-ECT patients with at least three psychiatric admissions were matched. A Cox proportional regression model was used to investigate the risk of pain between the ECT and comparison cohorts. The ECT and comparison cohorts consisted of 1246 and 4984 patients, respectively. Compared t...
