Muscle internal structure revealed by contrast-enhanced μCT and fibre recognition: The hindlimb extensors of an arboreal and a fossorial squirrel

We here employ a fibre recognition algorithm on contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography (μCT) scans of one specimen each of an arboreal (Sciurus vulgaris) and a fossorial (Spermophilus citellus) sciuromorph rodent. The automated approach accounts for potential heterogeneity of architectural properties within a muscle by analysing all fascicles that compose a muscle. Muscle architectural properties (volume, fascicle length and orientation, and force-generating capacity) were quantified in 14 hindlimb (hip, knee, and ankle) extensor muscles and compared between specimens. We expected the arboreal squirrel to exhibit greater force-generating capacity and a greater capacity for length change allowing more powerful hindlimb extension. Generally and mostly matching our expectations, the S. vulgaris specimen had absolutely and relatively larger extensor muscles than the S. citellus specimen which were thus metabolically more expensive and demonstrate the relatively larger investment into powerful hindlimb extension necessary in the arboreal context. ConclusionsSUVm does not correlate with glycolytic metabolism in human NSCLC, but does correlate with the proliferation index, suggesting that SUVm predicts glucose use by pathways other than glycolysis. These pathways may offer alternative therapeutic targets, including biosynthetic pathways required for cell proliferation. The research techniques in this study offer the opportunity to understand the relationships between SUVm, tumor metabolism, and therapeutic vulnerabilities in human NSCLCs.

ConclusionsDental providers should consider malignancy, including lymphoma, although uncommon, in the differential diagnosis of jaw pain, particularly when thorough evaluation fails to disclose a dental etiology, routine dental interventions fail to control symptoms, or there are atypical clinical or radiographic findings.

Pseudolymphoma (PL) is a benign reactive lymphoproliferative disease secondary to known or unknown stimuli mimicking a lymphomatous-appearing picture with potential misdiagnosis of overt lymphoma. A 64-year-old white man was referred for evaluation of ulceration on the left side of the buccal mucosa with 1 week of duration. The medical history revealed Alzheimer disease treated with donepezil and vildagliptin. Regional lymphadenopathy was absent and computerized tomography (CT) scans did not show alterations.

A 37-year-old white female patient was referred for diagnosis of a lesion on alveolar ridge that extended to the hard palate. In reviewing her medical history, the patient reported headaches that led her to have a computed tomography (CT) scan performed. As a result, fibrous dysplasia of the ethmoidal sinus was diagnosed. Physical examination revealed an ulcerated lesion, with irregular contours, erythroplasic areas, partially covered by fibrin membrane, and without pain. Radiographic examination revealed the destructive character of the lesion, evidenced by the presence of bone loss between teeth 15 and 16.

The 40-year-old white female patient complained of increased volume on face with no relevant past medical history. Extraoral physical examination showed painless volume increase in the right hemiface with 2 years of evolution, involving the parotid and masseter region, which was firm to palpation extending to the oral cavity without causing changes in the mucosa.
