One-Year Outcomes of 1 Dose versus 3 Loading Doses Followed by Pro Re Nata Regimen Using Ranibizumab for Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration: The ARTIS Trial.

Conclusion. One dose + PRN showed noninferior visual gains than 3 loading doses + PRN regimen using ranibizumab in Chinese nvAMD and PCV patients. Number of injections in the PRN group was similar as that in the LD group but remained a potential risk of vision instability during one-year follow-up using OCT-guided retreatment criteria. This trial is registered with NCT02810808. PMID: 31687203 [PubMed]

This study aimed to identify and describe anatomical and functional changes on short (1-3 months) and medium (6-12 months) term after intravitreal injections of bevacizumab (Avastin, Genentech) in patients with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in the context of exudative form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We performed a retrospective, analytical, interventional study, based on a series of cases with exudative form of AMD, which also comprised a prospective component related to the inclusion and treatment of the patients with a very new interventional method for that time (2006) and the follow-up of the effec...

CONCLUSION: Treatment with intravitreal injections of aflibercept in a real life setting resulted in a significant improvement in BCVA at 12 months and in a significant anatomic restoration throughout the 24-month follow-up. PMID: 31802046 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Li HY, Rong SS, Hong X, Guo R, Yang FZ, Liang YY, Li A, So KF Abstract  Many ocular diseases (such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and traumatic eye injuries) can result in the degeneration of retinal cells and the subsequent loss of vision. Some kinds of treatments, such as drugs, stem cell transplantation and surgery are reported to be effective in certain patients. However, no confirmatively effective, convenient and low-price intervention has been available so far. Physical exercise has been reported to exert neuroprotective effects on several neurodegenerative...

CONCLUSIONS: Diet patterns were not significantly associated with incident any or incident early AMD. However, consumption of a Western pattern diet may be a risk factor for development of late AMD. PMID: 31810976 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Muñoz-Ramón PV, Hernández Martínez P, Muñoz-Negrete FJ Abstract Age-related macular degeneration and especially neovascular age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of low vision in developed countries. Even though the introduction of anti-VEGF drugs in recent years completely changed the management of this condition, its cost, the need for repeated intravitreal injections, and loss of efficacy in the long term are still issues to deal with. Currently, a new generation of novel therapies under development is attempting to address some of these limitations. So...

Abstract PURPOSE: To investigate the association between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) in the USA. METHODS: A total of 5604 participants aged 40 years and older from the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. Retinal photography was graded into no AMD, early and late AMD based on the modification of the Wisconsin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading System. SCCs were based on the self-reported difficulty in remembering or confusion. Sample weights were used to generate nationally representative data. Multivariate regression anal...

AbstractAging of the microcirculatory network plays a central role in the pathogenesis of a wide range of age-related diseases, from heart failure to Alzheimer ’s disease. In the eye, changes in the choroid and choroidal microcirculation (choriocapillaris) also occur with age, and these changes can play a critical role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In order to develop novel treatments for amelioration of choriocapillaris aging and prevention of AMD, it is essential to understand the cellular and functional changes that occur in the choroid and choriocapillaris during aging. In this re...

Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of leading causes that induce severe visual impairment and loss in the elderly. Previous studies have suggested that blue light (BL) could induce retinal degeneration, which is a major cause of the onset and development of severe AMD. In the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, A2E, a lipofuscin fluorophore, is accumulated with aging. When A2E is exposed to BL, it is easily oxidized to A2E-epoxides, leading to oxidative stress and inflammatory response in retina. The aim of this study was to investigate protective effect of Prunella vulagris (P.V) extract a...

Repeat exposure to polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid induces TLR3 expression via JAK-STAT signaling and synergistically potentiates NFκB-RelA signaling in ARPE-19 cells. Cell Signal. 2019 Dec 03;:109494 Authors: Duncan RS, Rohowetz L, Vogt A, Koulen P Abstract Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), accounting for approximately 90% of AMD cases, is characterized by photoreceptor death, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) dysfunction and, ultimately, geographic atrophy - the localized death of RPE leading to loss of the center of the visual field. The pathological etiology of AMD is multifactorial...
