A Comparative Case Series of Haitian and non-Haitian Stroke Patients at a Single Center in Miami, Florida.

DISCUSSION: Haitian immigrants need improved access to care and prevention of known stroke risk factors, including hypertension and hyperglycemia. PMID: 31680114 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusions: Baseline RDW should be integrated into clinical practice as a predictor of ischemic stroke occurrence and outcome. Future studies should also explore the dynamic change of RDW in post-stroke patients to evaluate the clinical significance of RDW and its impact on the inflammatory state of ischemic stroke.

ConclusionAspirin reduced the risks of MACCE and cancer without increasing the bleeding risk in elderly Koreans with hypertension, T2DM, or dyslipidemia. Moreover, the benefits of the long-term use of aspirin in reducing the risks of MACCE were demonstrated. However, the decision of using aspirin for primary prevention must be carefully made on an individual basis, while estimating the benefit –risk balance of aspirin.

Introduction: Stroke is a common and potentially debilitating neurological condition that may require intensive care unit (ICU) care.Aims and Objectives: Describe the outcome of patients with stroke who require ICU care and to determine the predictors of poor outcome. Methods: The study was conducted at a tertiary hospital, Irbid, Jordan. We reviewed the medical records of all patients who were admitted to the ICU with acute stroke between 1/2014 and 12/2016. Demographics, comorbidities, need for mechanical ventilation (MV) and the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score were collected. Results: A total of 12...

Written by Meyers, edits by SmithA 50-ish year old man was working construction when he suddenly collapsed. Coworkers started CPR within 1 minute of collapse. EMS arrived within 10 minutes and continued CPR and ACLS, noting alternating asystole and sinus bradycardia during rhythm checks. He received various ACLS medications and arrived at the ED with a perfusing rhythm.Initial vitals included heart rate around 100 bpm and BP 174/96. Here is his initial ECG, very soon after ROSC:What do you think?Sinus tachycardia.  There is incomplete RBBB (QRS duration less than 120 ms).  There is diffuse STD, maximal in V4-V5 a...

This study is also a reminder that the health impact of a particular intervention (such as diet) may not be easy to predict or explain. In most cases, the risk of stroke and heart disease tend to rise or fall together, but that wasn’t the case in this research. Beware the study’s limitations This study linking a vegetarian diet with a higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke has a number of important limitations that should temper the concerns of vegetarians. The study was observational. That means it simply observed what happened among different people who followed different diets over time, without being able to ac...

In this study, AT1-AAs were detected in the sera of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and the positive rate was 44.44% vs. 17.46% in non-PAD volunteers. In addition, analysis showed that AT1-AAs level was positively correlated with PAD. To reveal the causal relationship between AT1-AAs and vascular aging, an AT1-AAs-positive rat model was established by active immunization. The carotid pulse wave velocity was higher, and the aortic endothelium-dependent vasodilatation was attenuated significantly in the immunized rats. Morphological staining showed thickening of the aortic wall. Histological examination showe...

AbstractEfficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to intracranial artery dissection (IAD) are currently not established. We aimed to present a single-center experience on IAD-related AIS treated by IVT. We selected all consecutive patients with IAD-related AIS treated by IVT from a prospectively constructed single-center acute stroke registry from 2003 to 2017. We reviewed demographical, clinical and neuroimaging data and recorded hemorrhagic complications, mortality within 7  days and modified Rankin Scale at 3-months. Out of 181 AISs related to cervicocephalic dissectio...

This study sought to evaluate associations between nephrolithiasis and hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke using a national sample cohort from Korea. Data from 2002 to 2013 were collected for individuals ≥ 20 years of age in the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)-National Sample Cohort. We extracted nephrolithiasis patients (n = 22,636) and 1:4 matched controls (n = 90,544) and analyzed the occurrence of stroke. Matching was performed based on age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia history. Crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using Cox proport...

CONCLUSION: In LCC, the clinical spectrum is largely heterogeneous and the course of the disease appears highly variable in contrast to other hereditary cerebral small vessel diseases. PMID: 31521395 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionThe average length of stay was 16.1 days, considerably higher than the national stroke unit average of 9. The overall mortality rate was 5% higher than the national of 13%. Limited rehabilitation services and time awaiting national rehabilitation beds contributed to the long LOS. There is a definite need for a dedicated stroke service at our hospital, local analysis suggests that 6 beds would meet the needs of our catchment area; and this would lead to better outcomes for stroke patients.  A further locally dedicated stroke audit is needed.
