Confirmed validation of an innovative PCR-assay without DNA extraction for multiplex diagnosis of factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene variants

Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) is a major public health issue in developed countries with an estimated annual occurrence ranging from 1 to 2 per 1000 inhabitants and increased risk over lifetime [1]. The major occurrences of VTE are lower limbs thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms, but any vein can be affected by an inappropriate clot formation. Besides age, several risk factors have been reported, all belonging to the triad described in the 19th century by Rudolf Virchow, i.e. hypercoagulability, blood stasis and endothelial damage.
