Commentary: Regionalization of Congenital Heart Care in the United States: Small Improvements in Outcomes – but At What Expense?

In this issue of Seminars, Welke and associates revisit the important question of whether regionalization of congenital heart surgery (CHS) in the United States (U.S.) would lead to improved outcomes. To investigate the potential impact of regionalization of care, they simulated progressive closure of programs beginning with the lowest volume hospitals. Patients were moved to the next closest hospital. Mortality rates were then re-calculated using the new hospital's original mortality rate and an estimated mortality rate based on the new hospital volume.
