Scoring frailty in patients hospitalized for heart failure: Impact on prognosis (and decision making, too?)

Patient frailty means decreased physiologic reserve and lower resistance to stressors, increased dependency, and fatal outcome [1]. Frailty is more frequent in elderly people, and its prevalence in patients with heart failure (HF) ranges from 15 to 74%, according to the studied population and the method of assessment [2]. The association between HF and frailty is obvious, considering that cardiac dysfunction reduces exercise capacity, promotes systemic inflammation, muscle wasting, and malabsorption.
