19.4 using non-human primates to develop novel intervention strategies for the treatment of anxiety

New and improved neurally informed interventions are needed for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Using our nonhuman primate (NHP) model of anxious temperament (AT), we identified the extended amygdala (central nucleus of the amygdala and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis) as a core component of the circuitry that mediates the expression of extreme anxiety. Based on this finding, we characterized molecular alterations in neurons located in the extended amygdala that underlie pathological anxiety.
