Linking non-restorative sleep and activity interference through pain catastrophizing and pain severity: An intra-day process model among individuals with fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain condition that predominantly affects women and interferes with individuals ’ daily functioning.58,80 Repeated activity interference can substantially limit one's successful adjustment to chronic pain through the development of negative self-schema and reduction of rewards that stem from engaging in meaningful and enjoyable activities.23,26 Hence, a central target of chro nic pain management is helping individuals increase their engagement in and performance of important daily activities.

Conclusions: We see a trend of improvement following BGI, but more research is needed to investigate this technique. Significant improvements were found for overall pain, as well as for mood and quality of life. We recommend adding BGI to treatment plans for patients suffering chronic, fibromyalgia-related pain. While other guided imagery methods last up to 20 minutes per session, BGI is innovative since only two minutes are required to obtain a positive effect on chronic pain and quality of life measures. AbstractOver 60% of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients achieve a good response after 12  months of treatment when following the European league against rheumatism (EULAR) guidelines for treatment. However, almost half of patients still suffer from moderate to severe disease activity despite this. In addition, mental health problems may remain despite reduced measures of inflammation s ystemically and within joints. Depression is two times more common in RA patients than in the general population, and intriguingly a bi-directional relationship with RA has been shown in cross-sectional studies. Chronic inflammation impa...

CONCLUSIONS: Given that primary care is the dominant healthcare setting in which opioids are prescribed for chronic noncancer pain, programs are needed to assist primary care providers to meet the rigorous requirements of guideline concordant care. The current study examined participation factors in such a program and found that certain veterans were less likely to participate than others. Identifying such veterans at the outset, in combination with intentional recruitment efforts and individualized interventions, may promote entry into PC-POP. PMID: 32421838 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSIONS: The IFR is the most comprehensive FM registry in Italy, and provides healthcare professionals with a secure, reliable, and easy-to-use means of monitoring the patients' clinical progression, treatment history and treatment responses. This can help clinicians to plan patient management, facilitates research study patient recruitment, and provides the participating pain clinics with statistics based on real-world data. It also helps address the Italian Ministry of Health long-term goal of using precision medicine for chronic pain prevention and treatment. It is hoped that the IFR will enhance both scientific res...

By DOUGLAS BRUCE, PhD On January 1, 2020, recreational cannabis use became legal in Illinois. More than 80,000 people in Illinois are registered in the state’s medical cannabis program. Surprisingly, many of their doctors don’t know how to talk with them about their medical cannabis use.  As a health sciences researcher, I have a recommendation that is both practical and profound: Physicians can learn first-hand from their own patients how and why they use medical cannabis, and the legalization of recreational cannabis may make them more comfortable discussing its usage overall. Nationwide, p...

It’s something I’ve heard countless times from patients with fibromyalgia. They’re telling a friend or family member about their condition and the response is, “But you don’t look sick” or “But you look so well.” Sometimes, the reaction is more of an eye roll or some other response that reflects skepticism that the problem is even “real.” Those are issues addressed head-on in a TV ad for Lyrica (pregabalin), a treatment for fibromyalgia. “To most people, I look like most people,” a woman says. “But on the inside I feel chronic, widespread pain.&r...
