Associations among gastroesophageal reflux disease, mental disorders, sleep and chronic temporomandibular disorder: a case-control study.

Associations among gastroesophageal reflux disease, mental disorders, sleep and chronic temporomandibular disorder: a case-control study. CMAJ. 2019 Aug 19;191(33):E909-E915 Authors: Li Y, Fang M, Niu L, Fan Y, Liu Y, Long Y, Liu X, Tay FR, Chen J Abstract BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a family of pain-related disorders associated with impaired function in the jaw, temporomandibular joint and muscles of mastication. Our objectives were to evaluate the association between chronic TMD and gastresophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to determine whether mental disorders or undermined sleep mediates this association. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study involving 1522 consecutive adult patients with chronic TMD and 1522 matched controls from 2 hospitals in China. All participants were aged between 18 and 70 years and were recruited from July 2017 to April 2018 Chronic TMD was diagnosed by trained dentists using the criteria in the Orofacial Pain Prospective Evaluation and Risk Assessment Study. Trained gastroenterologists made blinded diagnoses of GERD according to the Montreal definition and classification (at least 2 d of mild symptoms, or 1 d of moderate or severe symptoms per week). We used validated questionnaires to evaluate psychological status and sleep quality. RESULTS: Of the study participants, we identified 132 patients and 61 controls with GERD. Using conditional logistic regression analysis, we identified GERD...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential analgesic action of 8% capsaicin cream for topical use in patients with myofascial pain syndrome. METHODS: Initially, cream formulations of PLA (Placebo) and CPS (Capsaicin 8%) were developed and approved according to the current requirements of the health authority agency. The 40 participating patients were randomly assigned to the PLA and CPS groups in a double-blind fashion. Before the creams were topically administered, according to the allocation group, the local anesthetic was used for a period of 50minutes directly in the area of interest. The cream was a...

CONCLUSION: BSSS-C is a reliable measure of the four dimensional model of sensation seeking in Indian adolescents. The gender differences in the BSSS-C factors are attributable to real differences in sensation seeking construct between male and female adolescents. This study investigated changes in sleep architecture during ASV treatment in HFrEF patients.MethodsA retrospective analysis of polysomnographic datasets for 30 ASV-treated patients with stable HFrEF and moderate-to-severe CSA was performed, including blinded analyses of total sleep time (TST), and percentage of REM and non-REM sleep (stages N1-N3).ResultsFollow-up was 109 ± 32 days; mean device usage was 6.0 ± 1.1 h/day. During ASV there was reduction of N1 (34 ± 20%/TST to 13 ± 5%/TST, p

AbstractHigh-dependency units (HDUs) provide high-level care to patients who suffer from single organ failure, with the exception of respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation; HDUs serve as an intermediary between general wards and Intensive Care Units. Due to military and civilian needs, our hospital has established a unique HDU for patients with liver disease in China. A Chinese military officer in the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in South Sudan was transferred to our HDU for liver failure treatment in 2018. The patient ’s disease status, nutrition, sleep habits, and psychological behaviour were mo...

ConclusionCollectively our data suggest that the bioactive chemical pool which is responsible for the therapeutic effects of EW can be extracted in petroleum ether, and fractionated to a relatively small multiple components. Such components include known anti-inflammatory chemicals, which may contribute to the possible microglia polarization in brain lesion during the recovery of ischemic stroke.Graphical abstract
