Abstract Benzocaine has been well-known for its role as anesthetic agent and largely used in oral ulcers, ear pain and dental complications. Along with lidocaine and other local anesthetics, benzocaine has marked its part as an anesthetic in surgical procedures and as Na+ channels blocker, as well. Analogues of benzocaine have been found to possess biological potentials including antibacterial antifungal and anti-cancer. Some derivatives were found to have conspicuous action against tuberculosis. Current review focuses to explore the century long potential of the molecule and its analogs that have appeared in the ...

The objective was to review the efficacy and safety of the treatment with antifibrinolytics in patients who underwent oncologic surgeries.ContentsAn electronic bibliographic research was conducted in PubMed, OVID, MEDLINE, EMBASE, EBSCO and in the Cochrane Library data basis in order to identify randomized clinical trials performed in any type of oncologic surgery. The data evaluated were blood loss, need for transfusion and incidence of arteriovenous thromboembolism. Five randomized controlled trials evaluating 838 patients met the inclusion requirements. In the analysis of the incidence of thromboembolic events in the fi...

Authors: Siekmann W, Tina E, Von Sydow AK, Gupta A Abstract Regional anesthesia may prolong survival following surgery for different types of cancers. The mechanisms behind this are unclear but direct effects on cancer cells by local anesthetics (LA) have been suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate if lidocaine or ropivacaine have a dose-dependent effect on the cell viability and proliferation of a primary and a secondary colon carcinoma cell line in vitro. The colon cancer cell lines SW480 derived from primary tumor and SW620 from a metastatic site in the same patient were exposed to increasing concen...

Publication date: Available online 6 September 2019Source: Anaesthesia &Intensive Care MedicineAuthor(s): Shun Yamanaka, Lucy MillerAbstractOne in five Europeans suffers from persistent pain which, for the majority, is non-oncological in origin. Patients with persistent non-cancer pain (PNCP) are a heterogeneous group in whom there is significant biological, psychological and societal comorbidity. Recently, there has been a large increase in opioid prescribing for PNCP, despite its limited evidence base and adverse side effect profile, including opioid dependence. This review examines the effectiveness and safety of lo...

Publication date: Available online 6 September 2019Source: Anaesthesia &Intensive Care MedicineAuthor(s): Manish Gupta, Manohar L. SharmaAbstractThe anatomic rationale of cordotomy involves interruption of pain fibres in the spinothalamic tract. Cordotomy is indicated in cancer patients with limited life expectancy who have severe, unilateral pain. The goal in patients with limited life expectancy should be to improve the quality of survival, which includes improving the patient's ability to interact with others, and to reduce the amount of time spent in contact with healthcare providers. Analgesic optimization alone m...
