Maternity care of women affected by female genital mutilation/cutting: An audit of two Australian hospitals.

CONCLUSIONS: Women with female genital mutilation/cutting make up more than 2% of the antenatal population in some Perth metropolitan maternity units. Health care provider knowledge of, and compliance with, the Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting Clinical Guideline was poor in the two units studied. It appears that healthcare professionals need more education and training to provide affected women with the best care. PMID: 31420205 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Tzanetakou V, Stergianou D, Giamarellos-Bourboulis EJ Abstract Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic debilitating inflammatory skin disorder that affects regions rich in apocrine glands. Although the etiology of HS is not clear, inflammatory cytokines, like tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, participate in pathogenesis. Adalimumab (ADA), a human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that selectively targets TNFα, is the only EMA/FDA-approved biologic agent available for the therapy of moderate-to-severe HS.Areas covered: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to present existing stud...

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that administration of tulathromycin to pregnant ewes following exposure to C jejuni was effective in decreasing the number of C jejuni-induced abortions. Because of concerns regarding the development of macrolide resistance among Campylobacter strains, prophylactic use of tulathromycin in sheep is not recommended. PMID: 32101046 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusions: The common prevalence of smoking among pregnant women with HIV and its association with adverse outcomes indicates that smoking cessation programs in this population may have a significant impact on neonatal and maternal health. PMID: 32100603 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Contributor : Fernando BiaseSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Bos taurusInfertility is a disease that affects humans and cattle in similar ways. The resemblance includes complex genetic architecture, multiple etiology, low heritability of fertility related traits in females, and the frequency in the female population. Here, we used cattle as a biomedical model to test the hypothesis that gene expression profiles of protein-coding genes expressed in peripheral white blood cells (PWBCs), and circulating micro RNAs in plasma, are associated with female fertility, measured by pregnancy ...

In this study, we aim to investigate whether the miRNAs secreted by human embryos in culture medium can be used as embryonic biomarkers. The culture media were prospectively collected from embryos of patients who underwent routine in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) at reproductive medicine center with informed consent. A high-throughput miRNA sequencing method was applied to detect the miRNAs profiles in culture media of embryos with different reproductive outcomes. Compared with embryos with failed pregnancy, the embryos with successful pregnancy secreted different miRNA profiles into ...

AbstractNative circulating oxytocin (OT) levels in non ‐pregnant/non‐lactating/non‐medicated humans are very low (≤8 pg/mL). The lower limit of detection (LLOD) of our previous liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC‐MS) method (10‐25 pg/mL) precluded their quantification in serum and urine. Thus, we sought to improve the LC‐MS sensiti vity of OT measurements in these matrices by hydrophobic tagging and solid phase extraction (SPE). In the former approach, OT was reduced then alkylated with N‐alkyl acetamide (C12, C14, C16, and C18) tags or derivatized using sulfonyl chloride‐based reagents. In the l...

Purpose of review To review recent evidence on the capacity of vitamin D to prevent atopic disease, focussing on food allergy and asthma, and potential underlying mechanisms. Recent findings The incidence of allergic disease continues to increase worldwide. Vitamin D status is influenced by sun exposure and dietary intake. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to an increased incidence of allergic disease and asthma. These associations are generally strongest in early life. The capacity of vitamin D to enhance antimicrobial pathways, promote peripheral immunological tolerance and maintain mucosal barrier integrity may underl...

This study aimed to explore the effect of antidepressant treatment on the HPA axis, changes in depression score, and serum levels of TNF- α in depressed infertile women. Methods In this randomized controlled trial research, 60 infertile women who had undergone in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment with depression scores between 16-47 were divided into two groups. The intervention group with fluoxetine capsule was under treatment for two months before the embryo transfer, while the control group was given placebo. Depression score, serum levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α ) as well as cortisol hormon...
