Risk assessment of critical infrastructures in a complex interdependent scenario: A four-stage hybrid decision support approach

Publication date: December 2019Source: Safety Science, Volume 120Author(s): Weilan Suo, Jin Zhang, Xiaolei SunAbstractCritical infrastructures (CIs) play a vital role in providing public necessities and services; however, they are also accompanied by potential risk factors and consequent risk events. CI risk assessment is important for capturing the overall risk profile and risk sources. However, a complex interdependent scenario induced by inherent features of CIs makes risk assessment more challenging. The purpose of this study is to develop a decision support approach for CI risk assessment in a complex interdependent scenario. A characterization analysis of the complex interdependent scenario is first conducted from a system-of-systems perspective, where dual interdependency and scenario complexity are elaborated, respectively. Subsequently, a hybrid approach is proposed involving a four-stage resolution process, i.e., information processing, interdependency analysis, risk analysis, and risk profile determination, and integrating the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation model, the extended Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), the extended Two-additive Choquet Integral (TACI), and the risk matrix. By using the approach, the overall risk profile is clarified and the risk sources are identified; moreover, a valuable supplement to risk treatment of CIs is provided. Finally, the potential of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a case study, c...

The objective was to show the contemporary short-term outcome of the Fontan operation for a functionally univentricular heart in patients with DS and non-DS, along with an analysis of significant predictors for in-hospital mortality.MethodsThis was a retrospective study using the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Database to assess in-hospital mortality and its predictors in patients with DS and non-DS undergoing the Fontan operation over 16 years (2001-2016). The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Statistical analysis was performed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression models.ResultsOur stu...

EstreraABSTRACTBackgroundWe reviewed the efficacy of intraoperative intercostal nerve cryoanalgesia for pain control in patients undergoing descending and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (D/TAAA) repairs.MethodsDuring 2013 and 2017, 241 patients underwent D/TAAA repair. Of those, 38 were treated with intraoperative cryoanalgesia to the intercostal nerves at the level of f...

We report the case of a 66-year-old woman with lung cancer in which preoperative three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction and intraoperative images displayed a novel combined ectopic variation of the RUV and bronchus. The RUV was absent from the anterior hilum, but instead was present in the superior and posterior hilum dispersedly. In addition, the right upper lobe bronchus was ectopic to the lower edge of the "bronchus intermedius". Based on this discovery, video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy was successfully performed.

ConclusionsThe CHA2DS2-VASc score has relatively good performance in predicting POAF after cardiac surgery and may help identify the patients at high risk of POAF.

The anterior node appeared as a single cystic lesion without significant metabolic activity on scintigraphy images. The posterior node was a single solid lesion in the lower left peri-esophageal space above the diaphragmatic crura with moderate metabolic uptake. Endoscopic ultr...

We focused on the morphology of pseudo-Valsalva sinus after the re-implantation procedure and evaluated our novel crimp plication stich from the viewpoint of morphology of Valsalva sinus at mid-term follow up periods.
