Authors: Seo JH, Lee YJ, Lee KH, Gireesh E, Skinner H, Westerveld M Abstract Advances in autoimmune encephalitis studies in the past 10 years have headed to the identification of new syndromes and biomarkers that have transformed the diagnostic approach to the disorder. The disorder or syndrome has been linked to a wide variety of pathologic processes associated with the neural-specific autoantibodies targeting both intracellular and plasma membrane antigens. However, current criteria for autoimmune encephalitis are very dependent on antibody testing and response to immunotherapy, which might delay the diagnosis. T...

Publication date: Available online 21 August 2019Source: Microbial PathogenesisAuthor(s): Maia Marin, Mercedes Burucúa, Daniel Rensetti, Juan José Rosales, Anselmo Odeón, Sandra PérezAbstractBovine alphaherpesvirus types 1 (BoHV-1) and 5 (BoHV-5) are closely related alphaherpesviruses. BoHV-5 causes non-suppurative meningoencephalitis in calves. BoHV-1 is associated with several syndromes and, occasionally, can cause encephalitis. Although both viruses are neurotropic and they share similar biological properties, it is unknown why these alphaherpesviruses differ in their ability to cause neurolo...

Conclusion: Most subjects with AE in our Chinese cohort had anti-NMDAR AE, which had relatively good prognosis. Children with anti-LGI1 or anti-CASPR2 encephalitis were rare and showed good response on immunotherapy. Co-positive MOG antibody were relatively common in anti-NMDAR encephalitis, which was related to high relapse rate. In our study, the prognosis of autoantibody negative but probable AE seemed worse than that of specific autoantibody positive AE. Keywords: NMDAR, autoimmune encephalitis, child, prognosis

We report here the first case series of elderly JE patients from an adult tertiary hospital in West China. Medical records of laboratory-confirmed JE patients diagnosed from January 2011 to September 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were grouped into the elderly (patients>50 years old) and control groups (patients aged 14–50 years). Data regarding demographics, clinical features, and outcome at discharge were collected. Telephonic follow-up was performed in the survivors in November 2018. Of the 50 patients with laboratory-confirmed JE, 11 were aged>50 years. In the elderly group, all patients ha...

GDF-15, a member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily, regulates inflammatory and apoptotic pathways in various diseases, such as heart failure, kidney dysfunction, and cancer. We aimed to clarify potentially confounding variables affecting GDF-15 and demonstrate its utility as a mitochondrial biomarker using serum samples from 15 patients with mitochondrial diseases (MD), 15 patients with limbic encephalitis (LE), 10 patients with multiple sclerosis/neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (MS/NMOSD), and 19 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
