Successes and Challenges of Retinal Implants for Profound Visual Loss

The past decade has seen a leap in the development of treatment strategies for patients with profound visual loss from diffuse retinal degenerations, who previously were without treatment options beyond low vision devices. Patients with advanced photoreceptor and outer retinal degenerations such as retinitis pigmentosa now have the hope for visual restoration with novel approaches including the possibility of optogenetic therapy, stem cell therapy, and retinal prosthesis devices.
