Nonovarian Mimics of Ovarian Malignancy
Publication date: Available online 18 April 2019Source: Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRIAuthor(s): Mahesh ShettyOnce a pelvic mass is identified on an ultrasound examination, the first step in the differential diagnostic work up is to determine its origin. Most lateral pelvic masses in women are ovarian in origin, and the distinction between ovarian and nonovarian mimics of ovarian cancer is critical for appropriate clinical and surgical management. Adnexal masses detected on ultrasound can be further characterized by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) when needed. Superior contrast resolution, multiplanar imaging, characteristic signal intensity of common pathology such as dermoid tumors or endometriomas allows one to accurately evaluate adnexal tumors with supplemental use of MRI. Commonly encountered extraovarian abnormalities that mimic ovarian malignancies are categorized as being either predominantly cystic or solid. The common causes of such extraovarian lesions that mimic ovarian pathology include fallopian tube diseases, paroaovarian cysts, peritoneal inclusion cysts, and a pedunculated or a broad ligament fibroid. Less common causes of cystic and solid nonovarian mimics of ovarian malignancy include mucocele of the appendix, lymphocele, spinal meningeal cysts, extraovarian endometriomas, extraovarian fibrothecomas, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (Table 1). Identifying a normal appearing ovary is the key in distinguishing an extraovarian pelvic mass from an ovar...

AbstractA novel series of coumarin-pyridine/fused pyridine hybrids were designed and synthesized. Their anticancer activity was evaluated against human cancer cell lines MCF-7, HCT-116, HepG-2, and A549. Compounds9,10, and11 showed the most potent growth inhibitory activities with IC50 values ranging from 1.1 to 2.4 μM, against MCF-7 cell line. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that these compounds induced cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase followed by apoptotic cell death. Consistent with these results, the activity of caspase-3 in MCF-7 cells was tested. The results indicated that compounds9,10, and11 increas...
(Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University) A checkpoint may delay travelers but it can help give cancer free rein by suppressing the natural immune response that should destroy it, researchers say.

A total of 403 probes were customized to estimate the isoform expressions of 155 cancer genes curated from the literature with more reliable isoform annotations, where each of the 155 gene contains at least two isoforms.

ConclusionsManagement of patients with advanced rectal cancer and radiologically positive lateral pelvic lymph nodes is challenging due to high local recurrence rates. Further studies are needed to develop care pathways for the optimal treatment processes.
ConclusionTest sensitivity, test frequency and out-of-pocket cost were the key factors influencing surveillance uptake. Patients prefer a test with the highest sensitivity, offered frequently, that incurs no upfront costs.
ConclusionsIn this large institutional analysis, while LG for GC was associated with DSS and DFS similar to those for OG overall, non-inferior LG-associated survival especially DSS was observed in some subgroups rarely investigated in prospective or randomized settings. There could still be biases even after PSM due to confounders not accounted for in this observational study. However, these findings offer novel hypotheses for further validation.
Conclusion: Preoperative systematic staging by EBUS-TBNA of early lung cancer can reduce postoperative upstaging. Sensitivity for detection of radiologically occult mediastinal metastases seems lower than selective sampling of pathologic lymph nodes. Verification of negative results by mediastinoscopy in selected cases remains of value.
