Abdominal Pain in Children Develops With Age and Increases With Psychosocial Factors

Functional gastrointestinal disorders are highly prevalent, cause significant suffering, and are costly to society. Pain is a central feature of 2 of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders —irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. Although these disorders have been well studied in adults, their etiology is poorly understood. We sought to identify early-life factors associated with development of abdominal pain in children (2–12 years old).
