On the use and abuse of register studies: the case of menopausal hormone therapy
In medical research, many different study designs can advance our understanding of disease diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. However, as indicated by the evidence-based medicine principles, study designs are classified according to their strength to provide recommendations and to guide health policy-makers. The use of national registers to obtain epidemiological information has gained popularity, particularly in those areas of the World where these instruments are effective and allow thorough analyses.
