Music as a Postoperative Pain Management Intervention
PAIN IS A COMMON and frequently reported effect of surgical intervention. The World Health Organization estimates 266 to 360 million surgeries are performed yearly.1 Studies have shown that 40% to 65% of postoperative patients report moderate to severe pain.1 The most common treatment for moderate to severe pain continues to be opioid medications because of immediate effects, multiple delivery forms, and ease of administration. The US Department of Health and Human Services has concerns with increasing opioid-related deaths and opioid use disorder, causing the medical community to rethink the approach to pain management regarding the use of opioid medications.
